Wale releases sixth studio album, ‘Wow… That’s Crazy’; shares video for “BGM”

After months of teasing a new full-length, Nigerian-American rapper, Wale has finally released his sixth studio album, ‘Wow… That’s Crazy’. The rapper shared details for the album earlier this month, also releasing the Mannywellz-assisted “Love & Loyalty” as the final pre-release single.

Over the last few weeks, Wale has stated that the new album will be his final album, citing fatherhood as the reason for his upcoming hiatus. Although he seems certain of his decision, we have hope for a comeback, because rappers never really retire.

As advertised, ‘Wow… That’s Crazy’ is packed with features from Ari Lennox, Megan Thee Stallion, Boogie and more. In a positive twist, close collaborators Meek Mill and Rick Ross also make strong, unannounced appearances, joining IDK and Wale on the ground-shaking banger, “Routine”.

To accompany the album release, Wale has shared the music video for one of the album’s singles, “BGM”. Translating into “Black Girl Magic”, Wale uses the summery cut to adore the strength and beauty of Black Women. The video Jon J. directs for “BGM” follows the song’s affectionate intentions, showing a radiant collage of shots centred on beautiful Black women being carefree, while Wale performs his set and dances along with the women in the video.

ICYMI: LISTEN TO “STAYING POWER”, WALE’S FIRST SINGLE SINCE ATLANTIC RECORDS DROP

Reekado Banks drops crisp video for latest single, “Rora”

Reekado Banks is no longer being guided by a major label, however, the singer has been meticulous with his moves since becoming independent. After a handful of loose singles and features, the singer finally released “Rora” last month, as the lead single for his yet-to-be-titled sophomore album.

Over the neo-highlife beat Tuzi and Altims put together, Reekado performs a catchy set admiring the physique of his love interest, while also playing out a raunchy conversation between them. For the newly-released music video, Reekado Banks and his muse—both styled in a variety of colourful outfits—are captured in intimate poses, outdoors and in a sun-filled apartment. There are also crisp shots of Reekado performing in front of a live band, embellishing the bewitching groove “Rora” provides.

M.anifest & Simi engage in a couple’s spat on “Big Mad”

In addition to making an appearance on Burna Boy’s socially charged “Another Story” , Ghanaian rapper M.anifest has a history of collaborations with Nigerian rappers like Loose Kaynon and Jesse Jagz. For his latest single, “Big Mad”, he taps afropop singer Simi to add a soulful texture to the song’s sombre theme.

Based on a couple’s spat, “Big Mad” finds both singers playing out a heated discussion, after one party feels under appreciated. Simi plays the role of the slighted party, singing a hook filled with grievances and threatening to call it quits. M.anifest acts as a penitent partner, seeking forgiveness and asking for another chance, across his two rap verses.

Visualising the song’s narrative arch, the accompanying video co-directed by Apagnawen Annankra and Gene Adu, opens with both artists arguing with their respective partners. Later on, Simi is seen trying to counsel M.anifest and his love interest in a couple’s therapy session, eventually breaking down due to issues with her own relationship.

ICYMI: SIMI SHARES MUSIC VIDEO FOR “BY YOU”, FEATURING ADEKUNLE GOLD

Amaarae invites listeners into the mysterious world of “LIKE IT”

Last week, Amaarae released her latest single, where she invited listeners into her psychedelic world. Now, she has released an accompanying music video for “LIKE IT” in a bid to whet our appetites for her upcoming project.

The North Production-directed video is a mystery into the unknown world of the brothel Amaarae visits, with a fluorescent sign hanging outside the hotel, inviting her in with the words ‘Welcome to the Unknown’ imprinted boldly.

When inside, Amaarae comes in contact with many of the inhabitants of the brothel; from androgynous dancers, strippers to clowns to children and little men playing the piano, each new face more intriguing than the next.

The music video for “LIKE IT” is different from what listeners may have expected, seeing as the track itself at face value, is an R&B song which infuses afrobeats and dancehall inspired rhythms to create a romantic bop. Amaarae herself explains, however, that

We wanted to take the viewer on a trip. Throughout the video, you see the main character chasing after something but we don’t know what it is. I don’t even think she knows what it is but she’s intrigued and she needs to follow her instincts.

Asa fourth studio album, ‘Lucid’ is finally here

Earlier this year, highly revered singer-songwriter Asa returned with new material, after a 5-year break from music. She kicked off her comeback with a new single, “The Beginning”, as well as an accompanying music video, following up with “Good Thing” and its music video.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B2RXyxQo3C6/

Last month, she finally shared details for a new album, ‘Lucid’, revealing the track list and stunning cover artwork, as well as an October 11 release date. She most recently shared “My Dear” as the album’s final single, accompanying it with a live rendition video at Paris’ Studios Ferber.

As scheduled, ‘Lucid’, Asa’s fourth studio album, is here, and in usual Asa fashion, there are no featured artists as the singer goes the distance on her own.

Premiere: Listen To DAP’s Spirited New Track, “Thank God I’m Not Famous Yet”

‘Found my patience, then I found my greatness, then I got payments’

With every new release, DAP proves himself to be worthy of our attention and has rarely ever dropped the ball. He takes his craft very seriously, and the evidence is clear in the consistent quality of the music he continually puts out.

He’s currently collating his third Contract Thursdays Series, which he started off two weeks ago with “PRISMCOLORS“, followed by “Good Bad, Bad Good” last week. Now, he’s back this Thursday for the series’ third offering, “Thank God I’m Not Famous Yet“, where DAP comes to realise his success so far and basks in it, enjoying the little things before his inevitable fame comes about.

Against a catchy and energetic beat, DAP alternates seamlessly between singing and rapping, while still maintains his usual exceptional flow. “Thank God I’m Not Famous Yet” sees him rapping self-assuredly about his wins and what’s to come, before he’s joined by rapper Rozwell whose verse affirms everything DAP is rapping sprightly about on the song.

Essentials: Teni releases debut project ‘Billionaire’

Teni first gained our attention with her colourful personality as an Instagram comedian, which she fused into music to endear us to her more. She was the undoubted breakout star of 2018, with her smash hit singles, “Askamaya” and “Case” thrusting her right into mainstream popularity.

All year, she’s been whetting our appetites for her debut project, ‘Billionaire’, with an array of singles from the comic “Sugar Mummy” to the EP’s titular track. Now, it’s finally here, and is everything we expected it to be from the talented singer.

‘Billionaire’ is a cohesive 6-track body of work which sees Teni on top form throughout the project, in keeping with her usual penchant to entertain and inspire listeners simultaneously. The intro track, Nowo sets the tone for the entire EP, bedded by a fuji-infused beat where she declares that regardless of what’s going on, she must enjoy her life.

The next track, “Billionaire” is already a fan favourite, which sees her using the same mix of relatable and pseudo-spiritual present in her 2018 track “Uyo Meyo”, where she’s speaking the riches she’s aiming for into existence.

On “Complain”, Teni is self assuredly singing that she will do what she needs to do to get what she wants, regardless of any constraints. This sentiment will immediately resonate with any woman who is held back by the mere fact that she’s a woman.

YOUNG JIGGA MAKANAKI.

A post shared by Teniola Apata (One take god) (@tenientertainer) on

She shifts her tone in “Superwoman”, where she wears her heart on her sleeve singing about all the lengths she will go in order to keep her lover, while on “Shayo”, she sings about the effects alcohol has on her. On the certain party starter, she samples Davido’s “Like Dat” against an energetic beat, and we’re expecting to hear the song to make the rounds leading up to our official party season.

The closing song, “Online” sees her mixing all the facets we’ve heard so far throughout the album, bedded by a danceable Killertunes produced beat. Sampling Ashanti & Ja Rule’s, “Always On Time”, the track gives the EP a nice nostalgic feel which will excite most millennials who grew up listening to the 2003 hit.

Teni’s debut confirms all the acclaim she has received since her breakout, and we’re really excited to see how it’s received over the next few weeks.

DJ Enimoney, Olamide & Reminisce are all about the rave in video for “Shibinshi”

Afropop songs based off street-bred sounds usually cater to public settings heavy on energetic dance moves. In July, street-pop ambassador, DJ Enimoney teamed up with Olamide and Reminisce for “Shibinshi”, a boisterous cut on which both rappers flex their affluence and reiterate their priority to keep getting money. While both rappers deliver catchy lyrics, it’s the fast-paced beat by Young John that frames the song’s main intention as a party starter.

Following its established direction, the newly-released TG Omori-directed video for “Shibinshi” is focused on the song’s rave-inducing elements. In a handful of shots, a vigorous crowd parodies a church audiences with dances suggesting being under the song’s influence. Reminisce and Olamide are also seen performing their song parts in royal chairs, ending up in a club scene where they are surrounded by smoke and beautiful models.

ICYMI: MR REAL TAKES HIS PHILOSOPHICAL QUESTIONS TO GOD IN HIS MUSIC VIDEO FOR “OLOUN” FEATURING REMINISCE, PHYNO AND DJ KAYWISE

DJ Neo, Ajebutter 22 and Prettyboy DO’s “Side Nigga” will make you consider getting into a serious relationship

While Ajebutter 22 is no stranger to Afropop’s romantic charm, Prettyboy DO’s discography portrays him as a stone-hearted artist who only uses the L-word with regards to himself and his weapons. But with afropop being the fusionist genre that it is, DJ Neo has no trouble pairing the two singers together for his catchy new single, “Side Nigga”.

The mid-tempo mix of synths and bouncy drum riffs serve as a comfortable middle ground for both artists to express their self-confidence, saying, “I’m done sitting on the bench/ I’m a starter”. Ajebutter 22’s lyrics are pointedly addressed at a lover who he’s trying to charm into a relationship, while Prettyboy DO’s verse is less charming, as it finds him bragging with his usual bolshy attitude. Their conflicting intentions are however hard to dwell on thanks to the ear warming melodies that make “Side Nigga” a smooth listen that can fit into different playlists.

Best New Music: Rema finds new truths on “Rewind”, off his Bad Commando EP

In the past few days, Rema has been doing press rounds for his new EP Bad Commando, his third 4-track project of 2019. It’s worth mentioning that with Bad Commando, Rema has now successfully released 12 new tracks within less than a year, 6 of which are currently listed on the iTunes chart.

Lately, there have been rumours that Drake’s OVO imprint is looking to sign the young rapper, and our pick for this week’s Best New Music “Rewind” leans in to these rumours, leaving us wondering whether to expect OVO Rema anytime soon.

The catchy tune sees Rema realising that he’s currently having a rockstar moment only a few have enjoyed in the last decade. Produced by 1Mind producers of Swae Lee’s “Unforgettable”, and Oliver, Drake’s right-hand man and co-founder of OVO, who is also credited as a co-producer, Rema offers a snapshot of his struggles.

Socialising with his surroundings—Nigeria—where nothing is ‘organised’, comes at the price of mental peril. The government plays ‘Political Poker’ with the lives of the masses, and to cap it all, the responsibility of giving hope to the people falls on the shoulders of young outliers like him.

On the dance-inflected hook that holds the track together, Rema is not oblivious to the fact that wearing expensive jewellery or basking in his newfound adoration from the public would raise eyebrows. Still, he puts everything in an optimistic perspective, on the closing bridge singing: “But no matter the sorrow, there is a better tomorrow/ And I look out the window, dancing like I just won a lotto”.

All of this is a completely fair summary of Rema in this form, as Nigeria’s fastest-rising superstar. He understands he may not be where he wants yet, but he acknowledges the hope that tomorrow promises because he’s living proof of how everything can change in a twinkle.

Wizkid announces new collaboration with Skepta coming soon

Last month, Wizkid released his debut single of 2019, “Ghetto Love”, quickly following it up with NATIVE Best New Music entry, “Joro”. In between both songs, he shared details for Starboy Fest, a 3-part concert series for later this month, with stops in Manchester, London and Paris.

To promote his new singles and Starboy Fest, the singer recently stopped by UK radio station Capital XTRA, recapping his career so far and discussing next steps. In the interview, he revealed that he knew “Ojuelegba” was special even before its release, and also announced that he’s working on a music streaming platform in collaboration with UBA.

However, one of the most exciting parts of the interview, was Wizkid divulging near-future plans to release a new collaboration with British-Nigerian rapper Skepta. “Me and Skepta got another one coming, and it’s serious—me and him only make serious music”, he said. With three collaborative songs already—“Ojuelegba (Remix)”, “Bad Energy” and “Glow in the Dark”—Wizkid and Skepta have proven to be a reliable pair, and their upcoming song should prove no different.

Chidinma delivers a heartfelt performance in the video for “Nobody’s Fool”

The official soundtrack of the highly anticipated film directed by Imoh Umoren, “The Herbert Macaulay Affair” was released  earlier today. Singer/songwriter, Chidinma was enlisted for the soundtrack and delivers her most heartfelt rendition, titled “Nobody’s Fool”.

“Nobody’s Fool” is a piano-led solo by Chidinma, who is clad in a black flowing dress and pearl accessories for the accompanying video. Her appearance is reminiscent of 19th century cabaret singers in Europe, which further adds to the film’s retro aesthetic.

Her powerful evocative lyrics match the film’s serious subject matter as clips from the film are included alongside cameos of Chidinma. “I am nobody’s fool, nobody’s tool to be used and abused” she sings, possibly hinting at the series of protests led by Herbert Macaulay against the unfair treatment of Nigerians by British colonial masters.

ICYMI: Ramsey Nouah makes directorial debut in “Living in Bondage The Sequel”

M.I Abaga’s “The Warrior” preaches resilience through personal experiences

Earlier this week, we reported that M.I Abaga would be releasing a new EP‘Judah’. While the scheduled release date, October 9, has now passed, the rapper has pushed the EP back, citing issues with uploading the project to digital streaming platforms.

To tide fans over, he’s now shared the final song on the EP, “The Warrior”, an inspirational cut declaring resilience as a virtue. “I know on the way to the top, hurdles, they do appear/there’s no way to cheat on the process, handle your affairs”, he advises over sombre piano chords and sparse synths, also using lived-in anecdotes to keep his quips from being preachy.

“The Warrior” features a debut appearance from singer Kauna, who has impressed us by performing a soulful hook to reiterate M.I’s inspirational intentions.

ICYMI: THE SHUFFLE: REMEMBERING M.I’S “SUPER HUMAN” FEATURING LATE SOUTH AFRICAN LEGEND, HHP

Ramsey Nouah makes directorial debut in ‘Living in Bondage the Sequel’

“Living in Bondage” first came out in 1992 before Nollywood came to be what we know it as. The Nollywood classic was directed by Chris Obi Rapu, who brought the vision to life using a meagre budget, yet still managed to become one of Nollywood’s first official ‘homevideo’ blockbusters. For years now we have known that the actor, Ramsey Nouah acquired the rights to the iconic movie in 2015 which will be available to watch in cinemas worldwide.

Following this anticipation has been growing for the film’s sequel which was slated for November 8th release date. Adding to the orginal cast of Nollywood veterans are Ramsey Nouah, Alexx Ekubo and Enyinna Nwigwe. The sequel is set to follow one of the lead characters, Nnamdi whose lavish lifestyle leads him to a similar bloody phase as his father, Andy Okeke (played by Kenneth Okonkwo) before him.

Ramsey Nouah also took to the film’s Instagram account to highlight how the film came to be, he admits that himself along with the executive producer, Charles Okpaleke and the producer, Steve Gukas agreed that if they were going to make any remake of a Nollywood film, they would start from the beginning as ‘Living in Bondage’ was arguably the film that put Nollywood on the map. We can’t wait to see the film when its out in cinemas.

ICYMI: Here are some Nigerian films we are looking forward to watching

Here’s what we know about Funke Akindele-Bello’s directorial debut, ‘Your Excellency’

Some of the biggest films out of Nollywood in recent years have been facilitated by EbonyLife Films. With blockbusters like “The Wedding Party”, “Fifty” and “Chief Daddy” in tow, the multimedia behemoth has gained a reputation for putting out hugely successful films.

Their upcoming film, “Your Excellency”, looks set to be another huge release, serving as veteran actress and film producer, Funke Akindele-Bello’s directorial debut, featuring the type of jovial plot many Nigerians gravitate towards.

Written by Yinka Ogun, the story follows a billionaire businessman and failed presidential candidate, who then becomes a credible contender through the power of social media.

Akin Lewis plays the lead role of Chief Olalekan Ajadi, while Funke plays the co-lead role of Kemi Ajadi. Also starring in the film are popular Nollywood actors like Kunle Coker, Shaffy Bello, Emmanuel Edunjobi, Alexx Ekubo, Toni Tones, Bimbo Manuel and more.

“Your Excellency” is scheduled to make its national cinema debut this December 13.

BOD and Reminisce’s “Shenk Who Shenk You” embodies all the allure of street-hop

The archetype for dance-driven Nigerian pop songs leans towards catchy melodies at the cost of substantial lyrics. However, emerging scene, street-hop seems to find artists in a comfortable middle-ground, where imparting knowledge is backed by energetic beats tailored to the groove of the Zanku dance.

BOD’s new single, “Shenk Who Shenk You”, certainly embodies this, as it finds BOD rapping in a mix of English and Yoruba over the KSS-produced beat. His lyrics, “If dem sly you, no bu sekun(don’t cry if they let you down)/ Lo gbe jumbo ko gbe senu(drink something to take the pain away)”, assure listeners that there would be justice for everyone.

Featuring on the catchy tune, is indigenous rap OG, Reminisce, who contributes a verse to emphasise the song’s message that actions have consequences. Cardoso Imagery directs the music video for “Shenk Who Shenk You” in a suburban setting that highlights the gritty street reality that informs BOD’s savage world view. Both rappers are also seen performing their verses in the company of dancers like Pokoli and artists like Terry Apala.

Tekno aims for dancefloor rotation with new single, “Skeletun”

Although Tekno hasn’t come close to replicating the huge success of “Pana” in recent times, he’s remained a fixture in mainstream Afropop, due to his prolific stream of singles and videos. Deviating from sociopolitical incline of his previous song, “Better”, he returns to making music suitable for dancefloor rotation on his newest release, “Skeletun”.

Reuniting with Phantom – who also produced the Zlatan-assisted “Agege” – , the  production for “Skeletun” is a great accomplice to Tekno’s pandering set. With buzz phrases like “e don tey wey we dey shayo” and lyrics admiring the physique of a love interest, the song is clearly crafted to appeal to club-hopping folks, especially with peak flexing and concert season on the horizon.
