Krept & Konan enlist Wizkid for new single, “G Love”

Krept and Konan have just put out a pre-released single, “G Love” from their upcoming project ‘Revenge is Sweet’ . For the new track, they enlist Afropop giant, Wizkid. Over the drum-led beat, Krept and Konan rap about their lavish lifestyle, giving way for Wizkid’s hypnotic voice on the hook. “Gyal so hood me not lie, never let another man try” he sings, detailing how protective he is of his ‘ghetto love’ interest. In the end, we’re left wanting more of the Starboy magic.

Wretch 32 links Burna Boy for “All In” off his new surprise album, ‘Upon Reflection’

UK rap veteran Wretch 32 has just released his 5th studio, ‘Upon Reflection’, merely a few hours after announcing its arrival and sharing the tracklist. While the project contains like-minded appearances from UK rap peers like Giggs, Ghetts and Avelino, Wretch features Nigerian singer and rave of the moment, Burna Boy on the “All In”, a fizzy pop cut that makes for a potential single.

Similar to his role on Dave’s hit single, “Location”, Burna Boy adds a warm hue to “All In”, with his breezy melodies offsetting Wretch’s gravelly verses. While they deliver affectionate lyrics over a robotic 808 snares and bass, it’s their synergy that sells the song’s light-hearted premise into a replay-worthy bop. “All In” continues Burna’s stellar feature run and emphasizes Burna’s ability to adapt, regardless of who he’s working with, especially with the memorable trail of multiple collaborations in the last few months.

Paranoia and Love don’t mix in Nonso Amadi’s “What makes you sure?” video

Nonso Amadi continues to support his latest EP, ‘Free’ with music videos. His latest video “What makes you sure?” is the third track from the project with a befitting music video treatment. “What makes you sure?” is a serene guitar-led number that trails what lack of trust can do to romantic relationships.

In the music video directed by Seyi Akinlade, Nonso Amadi is in a phone booth trying to call a woman, who is most likely his lover. Viewers are also clued into his lover’s mind, with scenes of a woman tensely inspecting an evidence board intermixed and the sound of the telephone ringing out.

The evidence board is filled with what appears to be proof of Nonso’s infidelity as his lover tries to piece together his disappearance. “What makes you sure? that I’m not alone at my mum’s” he sings, walking the streets, while we see Nonso Amadi’s lover investigating his infidelity. Though his lover doesn’t seem to find conclusive answers, she spray-paints the board with a question mark, exiting the apartment before Nonso Amadi returns to find a wrecked empty apartment with an evidence board.

Ycee returns with “Dakun”, the lead-single off his anticipated debut

Earlier this week, rapper/singer Ycee finally shared details for his long-awaited debut album‘Ycee vs Zaheer’.  The proposed project serves up both of the rapper’s artistic split, with Ycee as his singer side and  Zaheer his rapper alter-persona.

In one of the promotional images for Ycee vs Zaheer, Ycee acknowledged criticisms by fans who prefer his rap-indented efforts but promised never to repress the singing side of his artistry. For the album’s newly-released lead single, “Dakun”, he reasserts his singing persona, performing saccharine melodies over the punchy, mid-tempo beat Krizbeatz produces. Lyrics with romantic affirmation complete the song’s lightweight tilt, serving as a reminder of Ycee’s proven pop sensibilities.

Maleek Berry Releases new dance-floor bop, “Somebody Falling”

Maleek Berry kicked off the year on a remarkable note, linking American rapper, Goldlink, on a raucous bop, “Zulu Screams”. Shortly after, he released his first solo single of the year, “Flashy”, and most recently contributed vocals to Mut4y’s “Turn Me On”.

His new single, “Somebody Falling” is his second solo release for the year. On the self-produced song, bubbly piano synths, bass guitar riffs and steel pan, Afro-Caribbean drums form the dance-indented backdrop. “Somebody’s falling, soon as she walk in, people them falling”, he sings on the hook, amidst verses describing the physique of a muse.

Prettyboy D-O drops fitting video for energetic song, “Dey Go Hear Weh”

Earlier this year, Prettyboy D-O announced his upcoming sophomore album ‘Pretty World’. Since then, he has released the album’s lead single “Dey Go Hear Weh” an up-tempo bop, where D-O’s mocks his haters over a catchy dancehall beat.

Now Prettyboy D-O has updated the track with a befitting music video, directed by Seyi Akinlade for UAXStudios. The music video for “Dey Go Hear Weh” opens up with D-O being beaten by a group of men dressed in black, who leave him unconscious before they flee the scene. What follows the attack is an invitation into D-O’s  ‘Pretty World’, a warehouse filled with money, drugs and a sinister air ripe for revenge.

At the end of the video, D-O’s enemies do indeed ‘hear weh’ as his loyal supporters drag in a man, presumably one of his earlier attackers. D-O, his lover and son look down on the man with murderous intent. Watch the music video to “Dey Go Hear Weh” below.

Tomi Owo and Alpha P’s new single “Number One” is the MTV Shuga soundtrack

Nigerian artists, Tomi Owo and Alpha P’s new single “Number One” is the official soundtrack for popular television series,  MTV Shuga Naija which started its 4th season this week. The track was released yesterday, alongside the first episode of the season titled ‘Choices’.

“Number One” is a optimistic number where Tomi Owo’s mellow vocals create a perfect backdrop for Alpha P’s heavy bass rap flows. Over the beat TMXO produces, both artists deliver a confident set, believing everything in the world falls in line for their imminent greatness. ‘Made it out gutter, I don’t need nobody cause I’m number one’ Alpha P sings, in contrast to his impassioned rap on courage and fearlessness of going at it alone.

MTV Shuga Naija is back for a fourth season and we can tell from the fearlessly independent theme of the soundtrack and the tense one-minute teaser released earlier that this season is going to be particularly challenging for the characters we have come to know and love.

GoodGirl LA serves up two remixes to her prayerful single, “Bless Me”

GoodGirl LA is just coming off the release of her EP, ‘La Confidential’, an 8-track project she believes reflects her life and where she is, musically. Earlier this year, she released a prayerful single,  “Bless Me”, an honest confessional where she cries out to God, “Baba shower your blessings”. The emotive track, transitions between brooding whimpers and wild mouthed wails, affirming her musical range.

To further whet fans appetite our resident girl-next-door, GoodGirl LA has just released a Ghanaian and Jamaican remix to her single “Bless Me”, securing befitting features from Jamaican artist, Tommy Lee Sparta and Ghanaian artist, Kuami Eugene. Both artists bring their own heat to their verses on “Bless Me”, with Kuami’s verse laced with a prayerful wish to travel abroad. Tommy Lee Sparta is more philosophical on the Jamaican remix, filling his verse with less material wishing. “Father show me the way on this lonely road” he sings, choosing to seek guidance and direction from above more than anything else.

Teni & Joeboy form a romantic pair for KaniBeatz’s single, “Mr Man”

After kicking off the year with “Ma Lo” featuring Brandz and Mista Silva, London-based DJ/Producer KaniBeatz is tapping proven Afropop hit-makers Teni and Joeboy for his new single, “Mr Man”. On the song, both singers deliver romantic lyrics with a lightweight energy, proving to be a formidable pairing in the process.

“Give me that ginger, mr man/tell me you love me, mr man”, Teni playfully demands of her love interest in the song’s opening, while Joeboy follows suit with a reassuring verse pledging his love and loyalty. The variety of synth riffs and mid-tempo Afropop drums Kani Beatz produces, frames the song’s primary intentions to slip into radio rotation and soundtrack club nights.

Best New Music: Step into Amaarae’s erotic house of mystery and horror with “Like It”

Amaarae is coming of age. In describing the video for her latest single “Like It”, Amaarae told The Fader, “I‘m evolving and evolution very often is going to be filled with risk-taking and full of adventure and might get uncomfortable sometimes but I want people to be okay with being uncomfortable.”

This may be news to some, but core fans probably saw this creative transition coming since Amaarae released her synth-inflected Passion Fruit Summers EP last year. Off the project, free-spirit anthem “Fluid” eased into playlists as an underground gem. One major talking point, however, was the “Fluid” video featuring a colourful sequence of intimate close-ups of Amaarae in a bathtub.

With a sophomore EP on the horizon, Amaarae is getting bolder with her choice of moods and sonic fusions. Her first single of the year, “Spend Some Time”, another sensually-lifting song and video benefits from a Wande Coal feature and smoothly threads the fine line between Afropop and neo-R&B.

“Like It” makes the strongest case for Amaarae’s evolution. Ambient synths and a dancehall-inspired Afropop groove background her silky voice, as Amaarae wonders if the desire she feels for an other is mutual. “Like It” is less of a love story and more of song about longing for an idealised romance that’s probably intangible in reality. The erotic new video reflects this.

In the video, we see Amaarae making her way through the ‘Lost Motel’, a mysterious seemingly exclusive spot where androgynous men, sexy strippers, sad clowns and midgets in cabaret masks, all come out to play. If Amaarae intended for some fans to feel ‘uncomfortable’, slow-motion camera angles and still shots rendered in suspenseful neon tones will arrest the most passive listener.

Thematically, her visual performance reinforces the search for the “undefined” at the soul of “Like It”. By the end of the video, it’s not clear if Amaarae found what she was looking for in the Lost Motel, but she appears to be more at peace with the chaos of her surroundings.

See Amaarae in “Like It” below.

Kah-Lo announces her debut solo single “Exit Sign”

Over the last twenty-something months, Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter, Kah-Lo has built a stunning come-up. This singer is continuing her track run with the announcement of her debut solo single “Exit Sign”.

Having only released a handful of solo tracks, her discography mainly includes features with long-time collaborator, British DJ and producer, Riton. Together, the duo have recorded an array of electronic pop and house songs including “Ginger” “FAKE iD” and the Grammy-nominated, “Rinse n Repeat”.

“Exit Sign” is slated for release next week Friday, and we can’t wait to hear what the New York-based singer has cooking up. If her interview with MixMag is anything to go by, we can expect more monotone deadpan—but catchy—house music inspired sounds. During the interview, Kah-Lo revealed, ‘I’m African but I’m not making African music’, differentiating her unique style from the growing global appreciation for Afropop.

Premiere: DAP The Contract makes the 4th drop from CTIII series “Switch”

“Try to get rich, I ain’t hearing shit”

DAP The Contract just completed both the London and Paris leg of his Everybody Falls tour this past week. The rapper has been on the road for a minute, yet he still finds time to make Contract Thursdays, his ongoing weekly music release series.

This week’s offering is a track titled “Switch”, an up-tempo bop where DAP raps about fake affiliations. “Everybody wanna switch up on you when you lit”, he raps, diluting his usual self-assured flow in verses about his wins and the effect it has on those around him.

The track also features singer, Elena, who adds hypnotic melodies to the song, “You were never there till I was flying high” she sings, referring to her success as an antidote. DAP also directs and edits the 1-minute teaser for “Switch”, featuring a rolling reel of distorted colourful images of him bobbing to the music.

Zoro, Vector & M.I Abaga aren’t with the fake shit on “One on One (Remix)”

Over the last month, Nigerian rap heavyweights Vector and M.I Abaga have been embroiled in a beef. While cooler heads haven’t prevailed just yet, both rappers share space on their latest outing, featuring on “One on One (remix)” by indigenous rapper Zoro.

Zoro initially released the original version of the single in August 2018, and this new remix retains the soul-sampling hip-hop beat, as well as its theme of sneering at former friends and partners who switch up after years of hustling together. Zoro rehashes the infectious hook and delivers the first verse in his preferred Igbo language, setting up the stage for both featured artists to drop their verses in English.

On the second verse, Vector’s puts on a technically sound display that hypes his rap prowess and makes jest of those who kiss and tell. Amplifying the more savage side of the topic, M.I fires off malicious barbs at an unnamed ex-friend, promising revenge on-sight for past slights against him. From their respective displays, it is clear that all three rappers aren’t with the fake shit.

Zlatan shares tracklist for debut album, ‘Zanku’; drops new single, “Yeye Boyfriend”

Zlatan became a nationwide phenomenon after debuting with the viral street smash, “Zanku (Leg Work)”, and stealing the show with a stunning verse on Chinko Ekun’s “Able God”. Since then he’s been in high demand, featuring on multiple within weeks, some of which have gone on to become the biggest songs of the year.

Asserting his prolific nature, the rapper is gearing up to release his debut album, ‘Zanku’. Apart from being an explicit nod to his involvement in popularizing the current dance craze in the country, the album title is also an acronym for ‘Zlatan abeg no kill us’, a prominent statement attributed to the rapper’s role in back-to-back hit singles.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B3m1FyDFfOR/

‘Zanku’ will be released on November 1st, and it is set to contain 17 songs. In addition to “Zanku (Leg Work)”, his sleeper hit “This Year” and the Tiwa Savage-assisted “Shotan” are the other previously released singles on the album. There aren’t any other guest appearances detailed on the current tracklist, but considering his star power and the calibre of artists he’s worked with in the last year, there likely will be a couple of features.

Revving up the rollout, he’s dropped “Yeye Boyfriend” as the latest single in the lead up to ‘Zanku’.Over the light piano chords and Fuji-influenced percussion produced by go-to producer Rexxie, Zlatan makes jest of good-for-nothing boyfriends, while urging women to let go of their unserious partners. Performed in his local Yoruba, and spotting his trademark ad-libs, the song has the same infectious energy that has made him a fan favourite in the last year.

Essentials: Asa maintains her unhurried pace with new album, ‘Lucid’

For an acclaimed artist like Asa, who has built her career off profoundly moving songs, top tier stage performances and prolonged silences, recording and releasing new music come across as a deliberate process impatient fans can’t accelerate.

Similar to its waiting period, ‘Lucid’, the singer’s newly-released album, is quite unhurried. Unlike previous albums which incorporate an element of urgency, ‘Lucid’ flows along with relative ease, featuring some of the boldest hooks and loosest songwriting of Asa’s career till date. In place of world-weary introspection and thumping hymns rebuking the devil, there’s ruminations on the dizzying highs and heart-breaking lows of romance, and a gently swinging anthem for happy people.

Set in an aftermath, pre-released singles “The Beginning”, “Good Thing” and “My Dear”, find Asa landing on different points of the spectrum—bargaining, acceptance and denial respectively—while trying to resolve a broken relationship. The connection between these songs, as well as similar minded cuts like “Femi Mo”, is the idea that it takes time for a broken heart to heal. In relation to the blue-eyed parts of the album, ‘Lucid’ displays falling in love as a worthwhile endeavour, even if it will end in tears.

“Baby you’ll never know, until we try this love”, she gingerly sings over the fast-paced drums and brassy horns of “Until We Try (This Lo’)”, urging a love interest to jump into the deep end with her. Despite her being ready and optimistic, the other party’s apprehensions highlights that it probably won’t be a cake walk, and that it takes two to make or break a relationship.

In the midst of these well-worn themes, “9 Lives” comes across as the album’s most personal moment. Alluding to the myth of cats having nine lives, Asa inserts herself into this song, loosely referencing her travails and her willingness to continually overcome. It also shows her intuitive power to turn personal into universal, bringing in connected characters like the boy on the street and the girl who refuses to be abused by him, to improve its reassuring power.

https://www.instagram.com/p/B2o8d2aIuLZ/

As is customary for an Asa album, ‘Lucid’ is earmarked by exquisite musicianship. The project spans multiple genres, with songs expanding into bigger and brighter compositions. “Stay Tonight” starts off tenderly before unfurling into a jittery post-dubstep bop; “Happy People” brings Owambe culture to a swaying jazz standard; while “Don’t Let Me Go” merges bluesy guitar riffs with New Orleans-style Jazz horns.

‘Lucid’ is the sound of an artist sliding into her house slippers, with few grand statements to make. For many other artists, this description would sound lazy, but in the hands of Asa, it’s feels fresh and simmers in with each new listen.

AV Club: Malika Warrior Queen Pilot episode had us all wanting more

The highly anticipated pilot episode for the animated series, “Malika: Warrior Queen” is finally here. The Roye Okupe-directed series was made available on Youtube on October 15 following its debut at the 8th Annual Comic Convention held last month. The first episode is everything we’ve been looking for in a kick ass female role lead, earning bonus points as Adesua Etomi-Wellington plays the role of Malika.

Set in the kingdom of Azzaz in 1499, the pilot opens up with Malika inviting the former Azzazian general Ras, who has sieged a neighbouring province, to her palace and challenges him in a duel for the throne. Ras does not fall to show his male chauvinism when he requests Malika to choose her champion to duel on her behalf, Malika quickly shuts him down as she elects herself as a worthy candidate for the task. She quickly takes him out and proves to be a better fighter than Ras.

The 14-minute pilot series keyed viewers more into Malika’s ‘bad-assery’ as the Queen of Azzaz stood up to one of the chiefs of the Council of 5 who threatens war if she did end her allegiance with King Bas by killing him. The pilot episode was definitely gripping and we think “Malika: Warrior Queen” is definitely a must watch.

July Drama teases new music dropping soon

July Drama has been quietly making his way into our playlists, from his 2017 single “Call Back”, to his last release, “She Like Me” with $tevoxcv released in January. The Lagos-based artist is painfully discreet, choosing to keep his identity hidden with a mask and only releasing a handful of songs at a time, including an appearance on Prettyboy DO’s 2018 project ‘Everything Pretty’ and his almost easter egg-like trail on Soundcloud releases like “I don’t think you’re ready for what is coming”.

In July, he took to Twitter, posting a track list of unreleased songs, with the caption ‘what do you want from me?’, intending to whet our appetites, as the track list boasted of features from DO, Wavythecreator and Daddy Showkey. However, we haven’t got the exciting project yet and given the calibre of his guestlist, you can imagine our excitement for it.

Today, he has teased new music, a single titled “Rough Play” to be released on the eve of Halloween which actually featured on the track list he teased earlier in the year. Released alongside the teaser clip are the lyrics to the upcoming single, “cuz if i bruk your heart, i know its rough play” he sings, addressing a love interest and drawing on connotations of play fighting which suggests a lack of remorse for any intended heartbreak. We can’t wait to finally hear what July Drama has been cooking up.

Watch the mini-documentary detailing Wizkid’s life before the fame

In 2015, Wizkid featured on Drake’s smash single, “One Dance”, a song that peaked at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 for ten weeks, and set multiple streaming records. Since then, the afropop superstar has ascended to a higher level of popularity, mainly amongst international audiences.

While these relatively new fans are more familiar with Wizkid’s more recent achievements and newer releases like ‘Sounds From The Other Sides’, “Come Closer” and “Soco”, there’s an important backstory that shouldn’t be disregarded. To provide context for the those who aren’t day ones, Before They Were Famous—a popular YouTube channel dedicated to the early lives of celebrities—has just put out a mini-documentary detailing Wizkid’s journey to his current level of fame.

Hosted by Canadian YouTuber Michael McCrudden, the 10-minute documentary touches on Wizkid’s upbringing in polygamous, multi-religion home, and highlights his influence which include Fela Kuti and Lil Bow Wow. It also delves into the A-list Nigerian artists Wizkid crossed paths with in the early days of his career, including 2Face Idibia, Sound Sultan, Naeto C, and his feature on M.I’s “Fast Money Fast Cars” that helped him sign with Banky W’s EME music label.

Although the brief expose documents Wizkid’s pre-fame history in tidy fashion, it also serves a reminder that we need to properly document the history of our artists, especially as Afropop has become a widely loved export over the years.
