Fresh L and Davido are done hiding their true intentions on “Firewood”

Fresh L’s “Firewood”, featuring Davido, is a dream marriage of high-life influenced Afropop and hip-hop, and also a hymn on how to start a relationship. The song’s general message—trying to win the affection of a love interest—might have felt obvious, but with Davido’s hook, boldly declaring “I Swear I Want to Marry You”, it shows the importance of being explicit about the intentions behind even the most mundane romantic gestures. Best New Music: Duncan Mighty takes the Tiwa Savage vibe up a notch on “Lova Lova”

Though it is a general consensus that, the so-called “return of Ducan Mighty” is a false narrative, his on-going run in the spotlight has no doubt caused Tiwa Savage—who has also been on a silent but consistent run all year long—to enlist him for a new track.

Taking steam off street-hop smash hit, “Codeine Diet”, the Mavin first lady recently eased “Tiwa’s Vibe” into public consciousness, along with a shimmering video. For her latest single, Tiwa layers Ceeza Milli’s voice as back-up on a Spellz-produced high-life set featuring Duncan Mighty’s Afropop and R&B blend. “Lova Lova” is built from ground-up on melody, with guitars and Shaku-styled drums, leaving virtually no room on the track nothing but a calming rhythm and bluesy Afropop.

With Duncan Mighty’s presence on “Fake Love” topped by last week’s Best New Music, “Gimme Love” in collaboration with DJ Xclusive, “Lova Lova”, easily makes three in a row for Port Harcourt’s First Son.

Simi covers Skepta and Wizkid’s “Energy”

Simi seems to have caught the bug for Skepta and Wizkid’s “Energy”, so much so that she decided to “do something about it“. Her solution was to create a cover, which she released as a video on her Instagram page. Simi’s version of “Energy” listens like the woman’s retell of the story Skepta and Wizkid share on the original song. Her version, told with lyrics as bold as brass, touches on the luxurious lifestyle of Wizkid over a remake of the original beat Simi she got from Ak Marv via YouTube. Nigeria’s anti-trafficking agency launches “iReport” app to give awareness

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Traffic in Persons was formed in 2003 to address the issue of human trafficking. Since it was created, the agency is said to have secured over 350 trafficking cases, which is not nearly enough as in 2016 alone, over 11,000 women were smuggled into the ports of Italy, the International Labor Organisation [ILO] reports. There have also been efforts to get citizens involved through awareness campaigns and education on what constituents as trafficking. Recently, the agency launched an app called “iReport” to give trafficking awareness, advocacy and action more accessible for citizens. With “iReport”, citizens can alert local authorities on human trafficking incidents around the country.

The agency reports foiling the smuggling of over 10 children into Russia during the World Cup. They believe this app will foster quick detection and action against smugglers. Human traffickers are the main focus according to the Director General of NAPTIP, Julie Okah-Donli needs to be addressed in order to end the trafficking problem. But the people on the other side of the bargain are just as guilty. The ILO reports that smugglers earn about $150 billion a year, meaning there’s very little incentive to stop. The rewards outweigh the risks. However, Okah-Donli promised that with the help of the citizens using this app, more smugglers will be identified and apprehended and they will face prosecution.

The app doesn’t do much in educating on what constitutes as trafficking. But with the growing number of trafficking awareness groups, it offers a strategy to take action.

Vlisco’s Beninese inspired editorial “New Traditions” pays homage to West African party culture

Asides producing and distributing fashion fabric targeted at the West African market, Vlisco Group designs has worked overtime to showcase, sponsor and create platforms for designers within their target market. The group’s campaign, “New Traditions” is only the latest example. Vlisco’s website describes “New Traditions” as a look into the past and the future. Saying, “Classic designs are updated, new ones are innovative, and colours are bold and computerized. Altogether, we’ve created fabrics that are as exciting, as strong and as beautiful as the real-life woman within”. This vision is brought to life in their recently released editorial video released to launch the campaign.

Shot entirely in Benin Republic, with a primarily Beninese team, Vlisco’s “New Traditions” is set on a backdrop of the tropical Benin scenery. Beninese models pose in a grass and sand fields, surrounded by Vlisco fabric, palm trees towering over them. Through the video, we see Beninese women, all dressed in the same Vlisco Dutch Wax material made into a uniquely designed for each model. The final pieces were, according to Vlisco, were created to showcase the ‘Aso-ebi’ tradition; where family and close friends gathered for a significant event buy and sew outfits made from the same fabric as a show of solidarity.

The remix of Spyro’s “Funke” features Davido and Mayorkun

Spyro’s “Funke”, released earlier in March, builds a palpable distress from just a few sonic elements S’Bings: a synth wash with a metronomic beep-like piano note and what sounds like occasional dispatches from a cosmic fax machine. It’s a strangely calming sound and like it did on the original record, it props up the singers’ emotive lyrics professing their affection for a love interest on the remix. Davido and Mayorkun aren’t passive features either, as they deliver impassioned verses climbing melodic scales with narrating their touching stories of their accomplished romance, “No Be Say We Sabi Each Other, But Our Love Dey Grow Stronger”.

Tiwa Savage, Wizkid and Chris Martin collaboration set for September release date

The first hint at the collaboration between Tiwa Savage, Wizkid and Chris Martin was gotten from a video Tiwa Savage shared, showing the Cold Play lead singer dancing to “Ma Lo” from her Sugercane EP. Seeing as that song also featured Wizkid, it’s safe to assume he was equally impressed by both artists and is willing to work with them on a new single. It was initially announced that the Grammy-winning rock artist would only feature Tiwa, but during her interview with Beats 1’s Ebro Darden, she revealed that Wizkid is also expected to feature on the single, slated for a release in September. The interview also revealed that she has a record with Jamaica singer, Kranium in the pipelines as well.

Check out the video for Niniola’s and Busiswa “Magun” remix

Earlier this year, Niniola teamed up with South Africa singer, Busiswa for the remix of “Magun”, one of the stand out tracks ‘This is me‘, her album debut. Busiswa matches Niniola’s teasingly seductive lyrics with Xhosa oomph tinctured with English lines.

In spite of the raunchy nature of both singer’s verses on the remix of “Magun”, the video Clearance Peters directs for the remix is far less suggestive. While the video for the original single showed Niniola’s dancers giving life to the cheeky lyrics, Ninola takes front and centre for the remix’s video. While singing “Only The Foreplay Is Allowed For You”, she’s seen moving from a limpid doll package— She’s the doll—to the pages of magazines. The scenes with Bususwa are set against colourful backdrops of dancers in bright African print dancing against equally colourful walls.

Disney is developing a live-action fairytale about an African princess, titled Sadé

6 videos you need to see this week

Yemi Alade – “The Black Magic World Tour”

Yemi Alade’s ‘Mama Africa’ album had such a crossover appeal that she released an international edition, Mama Afrique, a French, Swahili & Portuguese extension of the lauded sophomore LP. She followed up the projects with a world tour and has released the first part of her “The Black Magic World Tour”, showing the European leg of the tour. The video shows Yemi Alade performing with her Oversabi Band in cities across the continent.

Wale – “Black Bonnie” Feat. Jacquees

“Black Bonnie” is a single off Wale’s ‘It’s Complicated’ EP, released back in March. In line with the pro-black women theme of the song, the Yasha Gruben directed the music video serves as a testament to black love. “Black Bonnie” stars Wale who plays ‘Clyde’ with his Bonnie, as they chase their dreams together throughout history. In a sort of Black Panther-inspired narrative, Wale is seen on a throne alongside his queen in a village in Africa, before they lead the Black Panther movement with the F.B.I on their tail.

Ice Prince – “Big Daddy Ice”

After releasing his ‘C.O.L.D’ EP a few weeks ago, Ice Prince returns with a video for “Big Daddy Ice”, a previously released single. The rapper occasionally incorporates pop elements on his songs and this pays off through the dancehall fascination of “Big Daddy Ice”, where he raps over a synth-based beat Austynobeatz produces, patterned to Afrohouse rhythm. Clarence Peters directs the video showing Ice Prince, former Big Brother star, Cee-C and a few dancers in a greenroom studio that leads to some fascinating CGI shots of dancers on the streets of Lagos.

M.I – “Brother” Feat. Nosa & Milli

Without counting ‘Rendezvous’, since it has been classified as a playlist, ‘Chairman’ from 2014 was the last time M.I dropped an album. Its success and commercial appeal remain undisputed with debates about its shelf-life marking one hip-hop’s hottest debates last year. M.I is reviving the album through his recently released video for “Brother” featuring Nosa and Milli. Though the video is reported to have been shot since 2015, the rapper claims he never released it because the message in the song was lost after his fallout with Ice Prince, Jesse Jagz, Brymo and Milli.

Travis Scott – “AstroWorld Trailer”

Travis just unveiled his theme park inspired cover art for ‘AstroWorld’, but it’s his trailer video for the highly-anticipated third album that captured fans’ attention. The video is set in a post-apocalyptic world where Travis walks and rides in a shopping cart through the deserted and snow-covered amusement park in his hometown of Houston. Though the scenery has a beautiful allure with colorful Milkyway imagery and some wild animals, there’s also a sense of chaos experienced in the form of explosions. The cinematic trailer for the album featured a soundtrack, “Stargazing”, expected to be on the album when it’s released on Friday, the 3rd of August.

Venom 2nd Trailer

The new trailer for Sony’s “Venom” gives a more extensive look at the super-villain title character played by Tom Hardy. The initial teaser trailer focused on Hardy and the other human cast with brief clips showing the alien ‘symbiote’. When we eventually got to see Venom a few months later in the first trailer, but the new trailer goes even further than those previous glimpses of oozing CGI skin and enormous fangs. This time, we see more big Venom action scenes and even a full-on, symbiote monologue where the sentient costume’s reputed bad attitude comes to light.

Lynxxx is ready to fight to prove his love in his new video for “And That”

Because the definition of love as a concept varies from person to person, its connotation is often dependent on the ambiguous promises made between lovers. On “And That”, Lynxxx tries to talk his way into his love interest’s heart by convincing her his feelings are deeper than lust; “Man Ain’t Trying To Netflix and Chill/Man’s Trying to Vibe And That”. Though Lynxxx’s vocals integrating slurs and slang from London, the beat Spax produces is laid back and suited to fit Afropop’s mid-tempo vibe. “Bangers”, released back in April, finds Darkovibes narrating his climb to success with an energetic, full-throttle flow that lifts his inspirational tale to eloquent heights. Best New Music: Duncan Mighty confirms his return to ruling the airwaves with “Gimme Love”

Duncan Mighty surfaced on the music scene nearly eleven years ago today. The ‘Port Harcourt First Son’, dominated his hometown’s underground for years, reaching mainstream popularity with the release of his 2009 album Fully Loaded.

Though Duncan followed his debut with two more albums, recent features with younger artists (Wizkid, Ceeza Milli and Reekado Banks) earmark the beginning of a new era for his eccentric style: a fusion of excellent vocal work and melody. “Gimme Love”, his latest collaboration with DJ Xclusive is another evidence of a Duncan Mighty streak on the horizon.

The track lends modern electronic inspirations that leans into Duncan Mighty’s highlife comfort zone. He mashes his fondness for Twi phrases like ‘Me daa Si’ (which loosely translates as “Thank You”) with the Maetro D-produced instrumentals, painting the image of a Ghanian woman with a rich cultural heritage and his appreciation for the embodiment of such a person.

“Gimme Love”, brings to mind recent success of artists who have improved the universality of West African Afropop (Runtown, Mr Eazi, Sarkodie, Tekno etc) by bridging sound, languages and cultures across the region. As Duncan Mighty slips between pidgin, Twi and Yoruba while singing on a soothing guitar baseline as he’d done on “Dance For Me” nearly ten years ago, it becomes clear he paved way for stylistically infusing west African highlife in contemporary Afropop, and now he is levelling up to dominate the sound once again.

Safe to say, no one knew how much we needed a refresher like “Fake Love”, until the infectious romantic number, dropped nearly two months ago. “Gimme Love” is no exception.

Hear A-Q’s politically charged new single, “The PVC Story”

The mark of a good rapper may be in the ability to string cohesive words together to form captivating rhymes, but it’s the ability to weave those rhymes into gripping stories that separates the boys from men. Few rappers are confident enough in their writing to ditch the giddy toasting over party music to pen heartfelt stories, but A-Q spends 7 minutes rapping on his new single, “The PVC Story”, with no cushy hooks. But with a narrative covering several societal issues like terrible government policies, political apathy, depression, drug abuse, rape, political injustice and Nigeria’s security issues, it’s time well spent. DJ Yin, Bankyondbeatz and ShowDemCamp team up for new single, “Rewind”

There’s something almost otherworldly about the combination of DJ Yin’s soft echoing vocals and Bankyondbeatz’s EDM inspired instrumentals. After collaborating on “Good Loving” that earned a spot on NATIVE’s best Best New Music last year, the two have teamed up for a new single, “Rewind”, featuring Ghost and King Davies of the ShowDemCamp. Bankyondbeatz produces the atmospheric beat layered with ambient synths and a distinct talking drum sample that keeps pace with DJ Yin’s laid back hook, celebrating the party life; “I’ll Be Sipping on My Bottle, Alright/ Mr DJ Put It on Rewind”. King Davies and Ghost contribute one rap verse each, adding to the urban aesthetic of the Afropop number.

Dremo and Davido turn dreams to reality in their video for “Kpa”

Off Dremo’s recently released ‘Code Name’ EP, “Kpa” is a romantic cut featuring label boss, Davido. Their combination leads to a sultry mid-tempo bop with the Dremo ditching his aggressive rap bars to match Davido’s impassioned vocals. Both of them sing reassuring lines but Dremo’s verse sticks out for the sparkling, whirlwind interpolation of Korede Bello’s “Do Like That” hit single. The video Ibrahim Yilla directs has a dreamy aesthetic seen in the slow motion shots of Dremo having a good time with his love interest, while a stranger watches from outside the window. But it’s not till the closing scene that the strange man is revealed as Dremo, merely fantasizing about his dreams while tending to the model’s garden in Atlanta Georgia.

Kizz Daniel announces title and artwork for sophomore album, ‘No Bad Songz’

Despite ongoing litigation with former label, G-WorldWide, Kizz Daniel is forging ahead with the release of his sophomore album, ‘No Bad Songz’. Earlier this year, it was revealed that Kiss Daniel had completed the recording of his second studio album, to be titled ‘Evolution’with his former label. In the weeks that followed, however, Kizz Daniel left the label to form his Flyboy inc label and changed his name from Kiss to Kizz. It seems however that he has also changed his album roll out with ‘No Bad Songz’s release as his debut project under his independent label.

https://www.instagram.com/p/Blur_T_BgCt/?hl=en&taken-by=iamkizzdaniel

Going off of the art direction perceived from the cover art, showing Kizz Daniel flanked by depictions of an angel and a demon, it’s safe to assume there’ll be a lot of introspection on the album. Perhaps he’ll discuss the trouble with his label. The title also explicitly assures that there will be ‘No Bad Songz’ on the project which is expected to be released between August and October.

The FlyBoy Tour that has seen the Afropop star perform in Canada and UK is heading to America next. But hopefully, it doesn’t delay the project’s release date any further than anticipated.

His recent interview with Ebro, on Apple’s “Beats 1” show, gave some insight on how the track came off a freestyle around the word “Property” during a studio session.  Over the mid-tempo beat propped by trumpet harmonies from Mo-T from the South African band, Mi Casa, Mr Eazi promises his love interest financial security if she “Goes Down Like Economy”.
