See Falz and Sir Dauda in their disco themed music video for “Boogie”

“Boogie” stood out in Falz’s recently released album, ‘27‘ album for showing the less advertised side of Folarin, the boujee IJGB. A lot of the music we’ve been getting from Falz lately has appealed to the Nigerian masses even before his commercially successful campaign propaganda of a song, “This Is Nigeria”.

“Boogie”, directed by Visionaire Pictures highlights the classy lifestyle of the wealthy by casting Falz, models and featured artist, Sir Dauda in an arcade where they are bathed in neon lights and having a good time dancing to the Afropop groove. His video for “Next”, released earlier this month, is probably the only other time Falz has embraced his foreign accent so wholeheartedly singing, “I Just Made A Killing, Can You Please Call The Popo/Gyrate Like Man Just Won The Lotto”.

You can watch the video for Falz’s “Boogie” featuring Sir Dauda below.

Yinka Bernie’s “Save Nigeria” is the most patriotic song you’ll hear this week

Music and youths in Nigeria have always had a complex relationship with the government; It was the government’s lack of tact that birthed the culture in the 70s when the military tried and failed to snuff out Fela. Nowadays, his Afrobeat music is as engrained in the fabric of the nation’s culture as Jollof rice. And Yinka Bernie’s “Save Nigeria” is the latest in a long line of politically charged Afrobeat records.

Over a mid-tempo beat Gold Keys produces with talking drum riffs, horns and percussion harmonies, Yinka Bernie describes the poor state of things in Nigeria. But rather than going the more obvious route of attacking government, he speaks to the citizens. His lyrics, “We Need To Get Up and Show that We Want Change/ Solve The Corruption Can Not Help The Equation” expressing sympathy while also encouraging proactive compadre; .

See La Même Gang’s music video for “Yaa Baby”

The first thing that strikes you about “Yaa Baby”, off La Même Gang’s ‘La Même Tape‘ project, is the brilliance of Nxwrth’s production. His tactful fusion of futuristic electronic synths with antique traditional drum riffs takes listeners to the dancefloor even before KwakuBs and $pacely contribute vocals as they try to charm their love interests singing; “Look How You Come My Way, You Make Me Feel Some Way/ My Heart Dey Andele”.

The video David Duncan directs mirrors the song’s playful marriage of past and present with the market set where the members of the La Même Gang are seen trying to win the affection of their love interest. Ordinarily, their hip clothing, against the backdrop of the market scenery should seem like a disconnect. But with “Yaa Baby” playing as the soundtrack of their exciting performance—from staged flash-mobs to dancing the quickest shaku-shaku ever—La Même Gang capture the essence of Afropop: mixing the hip and the traditional.

Watch Seyi Shay and Kizz Daniel in “Surrender” music video

Seyi Shay’s “Surrender” is reminiscent of wedding vows. Featuring Kizz Daniel, “Surrender” is a profession of eternal love between two lovers, promising heaven, earth and body parts, should the other need it; “I will give you my kidney”.

This same overzealous show of love is portrayed in the spontaneity we see in the video. From a phone call, both end up on a beach with some of their closest friends. The scenes leading up to the setup—speakers, a white van, and friends gathering drinks—might lead one to assume the gang is planning a beach party, but later in the video, the duo emerge in modest wedding ensemble and share their vows. If you’ve ever wondered how to pull off a small wedding without alarming your family, Seyi Shay’s “Surrender” suggests an effective way to do it.

Astro RB explains why he isn’t on your top 5 rappers list on new single, “Let Me In”

Though there always seems to be new pop artists making the jump to mainstream acclaim every year, the same can’t be said about hip-hop in Nigeria. With the same set of artists getting airplay rotation, the gatekeepers will have you wonder if it takes forever to go from blog obscurity to critically-acclaimed and commercial success. Astro RB’s new single, “Let Me In”, however seems to find the rapper at a time when he senses he’s on the cusp of making the cross to the big leagues as he takes listeners through his tough beginnings, while giving some insight to why it has taken so long to get his deserved time in the limelight.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BjqGy4SFxfQ/?hl=en&taken-by=astro_rb

Over a piano-led beat produced by Swedish beat maker, Casper Lion, Astro RB brags about his greatness as a 20-year-old rapper making music independently and dealing with industry AOPs. His lyricism and storytelling show off his deft rap game, but the dexterity he displays singing the catchy hook is what makes his cocksure single convincing.

Listen to “.Mine.”, Ade Lasode’s romantic new single

The trick to seduction is being confident and subtle, and Ade Lasode’s new single, “.Mine.”, lies at the intersection of clarity and obscurity. The beat she produces piles up on a submerged techno rhythm with a loose weave of murmurs and ambient swirling synth lines that bath her vocals in mystery and allure. But her lyrics, “I’m Telling You Now That I’m Leaving With You Tonight/ You Better Let Go Of Your Fears and Your Cares Tonight” are almost impatient.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BkyKjZsFGwx/?hl=en&taken-by=ade.lasode

Though her words express certainty and confidence in her feelings, they are spun through a dizzying digital echo chamber. Streaks of drum, the occasional sharp-edge bass guitar and Ade Lasode’s voice bob through the murk, and make “.Mine.” soulful, grounding and expressive.

Listen to Zarion Uti and PsychoYP’s new single, “Aye”

It takes a certain level of determination to successfully set your own pace for an indie career. Not only is there sure to be colleagues surpassing you, there’s always a thousand people second-guessing you. Success takes time and as motivational books have taught us, what you believe is what matters most. This sentiment takes form on Zarion Uti and PsychoYP’s self-assured single, titled “Aye”.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BlARTqHh348/?taken-by=psychoyp

“Shey You Dey Tell Me Say All the Hustle Wey I Hustle Na For Nothing?” Zarion Uti sings over piano-led instrumentals Veen produces for “Aye”. His self-assured singing is mirrored in Psycho YP’s rapping, but even Psycho YP’s confidence can’t keep him from wondering how anyone could see how much work they put in compared to their contemporaries. Between adlibs and trap base drops, they assert what they intend to achieve with their careers, “Mo fe l’owo, l’ola, mo fe ko ile [I want to build houses, be at peace and build empires]”. Zarion Uti and Psyco YP aren’t aggressive with their claims. They don’t demand respect they have not earned, they are simply promising listeners that despite what the naysayers think, they are here to make their marks.

After featuring on tracks from M.I and SDC’s respective albums this year, Tomi Thomas just released, “Shaken” his first single of the year. His reputation for making ethereal Afropop meets the foggy chill of the Spax produced number that finds the singer enchanted in a love interest’s appeal, “Raising up My Blood Pressure, Wanna Know What You’re Doing Tonight”. The mix of mid-tempo Afropop drums with ambient synth lines stretches the dimensions of Tomi Thomas’ vocals, allowing him to hover between ghostly R&B cooing and melodic Reggae scatting.

Best New Music: Broken hearts don’t heal on Nasty C’s “Send Me Away”

Unlike his 2016 debut, Bad Hair, emotions run deep on Nasty C’s sophomore album ‘Strings and Blings’. This signals another shift from the rapper who claims to have “too many different spirits” within on “Another One Down” off said project. Strings and Blings offers a range to the shades of Nasty C, selling the 21-year-old as a renegade with self-destructive tendencies in one frame, then painting him a wise old soul in the next.

“She told me junior, do you like it when I cry?”

Set on pianos and synths, “SMA” features two-time collaborator Rowlene, who compliments Nasty C as he floats between his intuitive psyche and a sensitive inner-mind. Using a narrative style that invokes memories of Eminem’s award-winning “Stan”, Nasty C tells two sides to a story of love seemingly beyond the point of no return. “Somehow my heart feels safer when You hold it/ Like you’re not the one that broke it”, he raps, echoing his lover’s thoughts to close the first verse. On the chorus, Rowlene admits “This ain’t the kind of shit I go through” , leading into a second verse where things take a darker turn; Nasty C’s lover yelling “Junior you told a ho’ you don’t love me!/ She posted it you dummy”, while he blames her affairs for his loss of confidence.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BkvbXdEA5rR/?taken-by=nasty_csa

Apologies fall to deaf ears somewhere between the missed calls and grumpiness, both lovers, unwilling to let go of all the pain buried in their history. And so, the beautiful tragedy of this twisted romance becomes a prisoner’s dilemma. With the salient agreement that they are both trapped by their feelings, the decision to ‘let go’ becomes the burden of whoever is strongest enough to walk away.

Essentials: Nasty C aims for kingly status with sophomore album, ‘Strings and Bling’

Essentials: Nasty C aims for kingly status with new album ‘Strings and Bling’

Nasty C was unable to hide his excitement when he recorded the Instagram post announcing ‘Strings and Bling‘ was almost ready to be released back in May, saying the album was “99.99999999 done”. But after setting a 6th of June release date, its release was delayed till the 9th of July.

Notwithstanding, the reason for his excitement becomes apparent right from the album’s opening first track, “Blisters”, as he breaks down his acclaim, backed by an impressively produced beat. Though celebrating triumph is a running theme in Hip-hop, Nasty C also gets introspective on ‘Strings and Bling‘. He already explained on his Tim Westwood interview that “Strings means connections. Connections that I have with people, especially with my mother. The bling side is just me being a bit more spontaneous and just having fun with it”. The combination of the two takes a broad cross-section of the rapper’s growth since his debut with ‘Bad Hair‘ in 2016.

On the title track, “Strings and Bling”, he opens up about his struggles with anxiety and suicidal thoughts while on the ‘streets’, before he made it to the bling. The next track, pre-released “Jungle” paints a clearer picture of the chaotic and hostile nature of the street with an accompanying video, set in an anarchic night scene. And though the album is punctuated with arrogant brags, rather than hindering his work, packaging his self-importance with his anxieties is what gives Strings and Blings its soul.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BiaV6h8gVB0/?hl=en&taken-by=nasty_csa

Production from American producers, Blu Magiq and Cxdy as well as South Africa’s Africa’s Gemini Major, Tweezy, Gobbla, and Nani is top notch, but it’s Nasty C’s personae and buoyant enthusiasm that shimmers in the spotlight. He’s only 21 and likes to have fun so he can afford to get away with goofball lines like “Ivyson religion is awesome/I’m not selfish with the skopas/They call me dick in daughter”, especially if he has the good nature to laugh at the ridiculous line on “No Respect”. His confidence on tracks like “Do U Digg” and the effortless flow switching on “Gravy” more than make up for lines said in jest.

If you’re a fan of hip-hop, “Legendary” and A$AP Ferg assisted “King” is probably nothing you haven’t heard before; It’s a pleasant stroll down through Nasty C’s mindscape as he expresses his kingly status.

Things take a darker turn on “U Played Yourself”, a track that finds Nasty C giving relationship advice on how to avoid getting played, and “SMA”, one of the 3 tracks with a guest feature. “SMA” stands out in particular because of the Enimem-style narration of a broken relationship between lovers who clearly love each other but are too self destructive to try to find happiness; “Somehow My Heart Feels Safer When You Hold it/Like You Not the One That Broke it”.

Over somber percussion, Nasty C’s insecurities are brought to light on “Another One Down” where he calls himself “Sensitive” and explains how he is learning to be more trusting and open. As if to prove it, on the next track, “Everything”, he gets emotional and admits his feelings for a love interest while featured guest, Kaien Cruz encourages him singing “We Can Be Who We Are In My House/You Don’t Have To Worry About Nothing Cause I’ll Give You Everything”. There are other pseudo-romantic tracks like “Mrs Me” and “My Baby” but ‘Strings and Bling‘ closes with “Jigga Jigga”, a cocksure trap number confirming Nasty C’s celebrity.

Uzo Aduba is apprehensive, but brave in the new season of “Orange Is The New Black”

Life is even more challenging for the inmates at the Litchfield Penitentiary in the recently released ominous trailer for the latest season of Netflix’s “Orange Is The New Black. To recap, the final episode of season five saw ten of the prison’s inmates, including Alex and Piper, hiding in Frieda’s bunker that had just been broken into by the officers, while the rest of the inmates were being transported to new prisons. The teaser trailer, which dropped early last month showed us the extent of the damage;

The teaser continued with a new opening credits scene released via Netflix. It showed snippets of a max security facility, introducing us to the inmates’ new home. On the newly released trailer however, we get a sense of Suzanne (Uzo Aduba) being escorted to a new cell by the guard as she screams “This isn’t home — this is not home!” to show how deeply the move threatens the relationships formed at their previous facility. The same sentiment is shared by another inmate from the former facility who complains about her new roommate and the how irksome the new rules are.

Asides getting used to the new living situation, the women apparently have questions to answer for the disruptive riot. The officials offer plea deals in an attempt to get the women to give someone up. Most of the women aren’t budging, as you’d expect, but the threats keep coming from outside and within the max facility. The hours in interrogation rooms, when combined with attempting to navigate life within the confined walls of the new facility leaves the women restless and scared. But in all the chaos, Red reminds us that her girls are “strong” and steadfast. Let’s hope she’s right. The new season will be released on the 27th of July.

To avoid understating, Duncan Mighty’s impact on Nigerian music, we won’t specifically say Wizkid has successfully revived the Afropop legend’s name on air. But his feature on Reekado Banks’ “Bio Bio” packs more of a punch now than it would have if it was released last year.

Reekado Banks employs Duncan Mighty’s convincingly romantic vocals and Baby Fresh’s deft production for a sultry new single dedicated to lovers who love a good dance. Falz, Maleek Berry and MEDIKAL get boujee for new video, “Next”

The last time we saw Falz in a music video, he was bare-chest and lamenting the poor state of Nigeria in a “This Is Nigeria” parody. So when we glimpse a figure with the same mane and glasses spotting a bourgeoisie costume and smoking from a fancy pipe, the disconnect is sharp and rather uncomfortable.

The Falz we get on “Next” raps “Say Hello To The Bad Guy, Some Dey Try Fight With Wrongest Negro”, while wearing a flamboyant Elizabethan style costume and being waited on by pretty handmaidens. Maleek Berry’s feature on the hook, interpolating his chorus from “On Fire” and the trap-inspired beats allow Falz operate in the realm of ostentatious glory in the recently released video as we watch him drinking tea and playing chess in the glamorous palace setting Visionniare Pictures directs.

Listen to Burna boy and Geko on the remix of Kida Kudz’ Issa Vibe

Nigerian-UK based artist Kida Kudz has teamed up with Burna Boy and UK’s Geko for the remix of his earlier released single, “Issa Vibe”. The remix strips “Issa Vibe” of all its cringest derogatory lines so that all that is left of Kida Kudz’ original is tame sexual lyrics and euphonious lines honouring the end of the week “It’s been a long week mi haffi fly away”.

Burna boy and Geko fill the sparseness, complementing Kida Kudz toned-down lines by weaving bawdy lyrics into the piano and drum combo instrumentals. Along with the suggestive lyrics, Burna illustrates the life of a man of his pedigree, “Cuz its a mad ting when i arrive, cameras flash when i hop out the ride”, while Geko focuses on what the gathering is about: partying with your best buds on a Friday night.
