While Ajebutter 22 is no stranger to Afropop’s romantic charm, Prettyboy DO’s discography portrays him as a stone-hearted artist who only uses the L-word with regards to himself and his weapons. But with afropop being the fusionist genre that it is, DJ Neo has no trouble pairing the two singers together for his catchy new single, “Side Nigga”.

The mid-tempo mix of synths and bouncy drum riffs serve as a comfortable middle ground for both artists to express their self-confidence, saying, “I’m done sitting on the bench/ I’m a starter”. Ajebutter 22’s lyrics are pointedly addressed at a lover who he’s trying to charm into a relationship, while Prettyboy DO’s verse is less charming, as it finds him bragging with his usual bolshy attitude. Their conflicting intentions are however hard to dwell on thanks to the ear warming melodies that make “Side Nigga” a smooth listen that can fit into different playlists.
