Wizkid Wins Big At BET Soul Train Award For “Brown Skin Girl”

Alongside South African artist, Anatii

Earlier on in the year, Beyoncé enlisted a bunch of Nigerian musicians for Lion King: The Gift,  her compilation album for the remake of Disney classic, The Lion King. One of the undeniable soundtrack, was the Wizkid-assisted “Brown Skin Girl“, which went on to become a global phenomenon very quickly.

Following wild success and Billboard Hot 100 debut at #74, “Brown Skin Girl” has now picked up the Ashford & Simpson Songwriter’s award at the BET Soul Train Awards last night.

Immediately the song dropped, it became a fan favourite due to its heartwarming message to black girls everywhere. In a world where our looks are constantly policed and measured against Eurocentric standards of beauty, “Brown Skin Girl” serves as reassurance to doubting women everywhere, pumping them full of self-confidence to be comfortable in their own skin as Beyoncé and Wizkid sing a sweet serenade.

Given this impact, we’re glad that the song is gaining due recognition and are very proud that African artists such as Wizkid and Anatii were recognised for contributing to this paradigm shift, not only for African women, but black women all over the world.
