Double Drop and Alassane Badboy Are Bringing Senegal and Mozambique Together on ‘Jinn’

By joining forces on 'Jinn,' Double Drop and Alassane Badboy invite audiences into a transformative sonic universe.

African electronic music continues to evolve beyond borders, and ‘Jinn’ stands as one of the continent’s most compelling new artistic statements. Bringing together Senegalese singer-songwriter Alassane Badboy and Mozambican electronic producer Double Drop, the six-track project merges West African vocal traditions with Southern African Afro-Tech and electronic production to create a bold, borderless sound rooted in African identity.

Created between Dakar, Maputo and Italy, ‘Jinn’ is the result of an organic collaboration sparked by a shared commitment to pushing African music into new creative territories. What began as a remote exchange of ideas quickly evolved into a full-length project before the duo eventually came together in Genoa, Italy, where weeks of intensive studio sessions transformed their vision into reality.

Inspired by the Wolof concept of the Jambaar, a resilient life warrior, the album follows a deeply spiritual narrative exploring identity, perseverance, ancestral wisdom and self-discovery. Sung entirely in Wolof, the project embraces language as both a cultural archive and a tool of decolonisation, demonstrating that emotion transcends linguistic barriers while reaffirming the importance of preserving Africa’s indigenous voices.

Across its six tracks, ‘Jinn’ journeys through themes of spirituality, mythology, Pan-African unity and collective healing. From the meditative opening of “Niaay,” to the mystical storytelling of “Mame Coumba,” the celebratory energy of  “Kutlhu,” and the introspective reflections of  “Jamm Ay,” the project seamlessly fuses Afro-House, Afro-Tech, traditional African melodies and contemporary Electronic Music into an immersive listening experience designed for both dance floors and deep reflection.

Beyond the music itself, ‘Jinn’ also serves as a statement on artistic ownership. Released independently through Xibalo Records, the project champions African artists building their own creative ecosystems while demonstrating the power of collaboration across African countries without relying on traditional industry gatekeepers. The album presents a blueprint for a new generation of African creatives committed to shaping their own narratives and strengthening cultural exchange across the continent.

By joining forces, Double Drop and Alassane Badboy invite audiences into a transformative sonic universe where tradition meets futurism, spirituality meets electronic innovation, and Africa’s diverse musical cultures converge to tell a shared story of resilience, creativity and possibility.
