See Brymo’s artsy music video for “Let Us Be Great”

Depicting the myopic effect of following tradition

The ‘most important’ video this year seems to be the one that courted controversy and generated thinkpieces. It’s an accurate reflection of the times we live in where fans appreciate art for the thought put into the message over the actual content and quality. Just as those who embraced Falz’s “This is Nigeria” overlooked the unoriginal direction of the video and its rushed motif because it was a convenient way to feel edgy and subversive, the video for Brymo’s “Let Us Be Great” is a hearty contribution to the joke of an art form.

Off his recently released ‘Oso’ album, “Let Us Be Great” addresses the myopic effects of blindly following tradition; “The Whole World is Moving on, What Are We Waiting For”. And though the video Native Maqari and Simon Rouby direct doesn’t have a narrative or something resembling a budget with one take of Qudus Onikeku maniacally dancing over some tablets, it emulates Brymo’s emotive performance of the song.
